Charlie Sawyer’s award-winning photographs of wildlife and coastal scenes have appeared in juried exhibitions, as advertising, as cover art, and in galleries. Signed prints are available from the artist and at art shows in Tallahassee and Apalachicola.
Charlie used his skills with a 35mm film camera for money to help earn a degree in Communication Studies, which led him to a career in broadcasting. He later served for 11 years on the faculty of the Florida State University College of Communication, teaching courses in film studies, video production, and broadcasting. He earned a Master’s Degree in Education and began designing instructional materials for the classroom and the web. The advent of digital cameras brought him back to still images.
About his art, Charlie says, “Every day, in Florida’s wild and watery areas, astonishing scenes of magic are unfolding. I try to capture that magic by getting out with my camera early and often. Photography lets me share my sense of joyful wonder. I’m intrigued by the interplay of form and reflection, and the way air and water play with light. Birds, boats, and coastal scenes make naturally interesting and dramatic subjects, but I keep my eyes open for anything. I want my images to evoke what I was feeling when I saw the scene and took the picture.”
